Info Box

Although we have known about neurodivergent learners since the 1930s, different terms have been used to describe them. In the 1960s, schools labeled children who learned differently as having learning disabilities. However, the idea of neurodiversity began in the late 1980s. This changed how we understand these learners. Today, we see these differences as natural variations in how the brain works. Unfortunately, bright and capable children struggle in a one-size-fits-all classroom. Often feeling less than or even disabled, but those are old preconceptions that no longer matter.
